I am so nervous in anticipation of this post. For so many reasons, mostly self-inflicted. Are my pictures good enough? Is everything staged perfectly? Is the lighting ok? You get the idea. I am not a professional designer or a professional photographer but, I have to say, I am so so proud of this space. I truly designed this kitchen from scratch. I knew what I wanted and even when the cabinet builder doubted my vision, I stuck to it and I am so happy that I did.
As I’ve mentioned in my other house before and after posts (here, here, here, here, and here), when Seth and I decided to downsize in order for me to stay home with Harper, it wasn’t the smaller space that made me hesitant, but the functionality. The kitchen was old and useless. It had a horrible lay-out with no place to sit and eat as a family except a bar. That was a deal breaker for me; growing up family meals were so important and it is a tradition I plan on carrying on with my children. Also, we love hosting people and this house just wasn’t set up for that kind of lifestyle.
It ended up being a total gut job. Seth did all the demo himself to save some money and he literally ripped out everything but the wall, including the floors which had to be redone after we removed all of the cabinets. We toyed with the idea of an Ikea kitchen. They really are amazing and the price point is so good. But, this house is old. Like 100 years old, old. And, nothing is level or symmetrical. We ultimately decided against it and figured if we were going to do it, we should have it done right.
So, we hired a local cabinet builder, Challenge Cabinets, and they were seriously wonderful. James (the owner) came and met with us and totally understood what I wanted for the space. He took measurements and his wife Martha drew up design plans shortly after our discussion. Again, my main goals were functionality and storage.

It turned out better than I could have imagined. After the install, the cabinet builder told me that he was super nervous about how it would turn out with the navy. Thanks for the vote of confidence! Ha! I will do a product roundup later this week. I love it! Do you love it? If you want to see more of my home tour, check it out here!
