Home Office Makeover

My interior design business has recently picked up (which is amazing). And, this up-tick in business has warranted a little change in the way I’ve been working–read, out of my office shed with no electricity among the baby items no longer in use, the lawnmower, and the tools. I needed somewhere to house all of my fabric swatches, floor samples, granite pieces, etc. Not to mention a real desk to use while I’m putting together proposals and design plans.

As I mentioned in this post, small space living isn’t without its challenges and every space needs to serve a purpose. We have a small “bedroom” (and I use the term loosely) off of the living room. Seth has been using it as his office since we moved in. I haven’t really needed a real working space until now. I had a little leaning desk in the corner, but, honestly the only real purpose it served was as a dumping ground for piles of bills and papers.

Before

There was no room for much else once a chair was at the desk. Directly across from the desk was a small closet that Seth used for his clothes. So, we decided to remove the closet, which meant that I had to rearrange the master bedroom closet to actually share with my husband. (Yup, that is how much I wanted some office space—I gave up half of my master closet, which in a small house is no easy feat.)

After

I could not be more in love with the end result. It is small, but, super functional. It feels so good to have a space to work that works for me. I have a place for all of my samples, ample desk space, and more storage than I could ask for. Plus, I think it looks pretty cute, too!

Believe it or not, the cabinet is from Walmart and I kind of love it. With the caveat that you get what you pay for. It is only $219 and it works perfectly for the space. The actual structure is really well done and not flimsy at all. The door hardware and slide mechanism leave a little to be desired. All-in-all, it is a really great piece and I am very happy with the function, the look, and most of all, the price.
